Warner

Elizabeth Warner, daughter of Elisha and Elizabeth (Babcock) Warner, born in Mansfield, Tolland, Connecticut, 17 April 1738; died in Lebanon, Grafton, New Hampshire, before 1774; married on 12 April 1764, Jonathan Bingham, son of Jonathan and Mary (Abbe) Bingham, born in Windham, Windham, Connecticut, 20 February 1735; died in Cornish, Chesire, New Hampshire, 9 Mar 1812. For this lineage, see Ancestors of the Bingham Family of Utah, p. 181.

Elisha Warner, son of Andrew and Deborah (---) Warner, born in Windham, Windham, Connecticut, April 1707; died in Mansfield, Tolland, Connecticut, 21 August 1751; married Elizabeth Babcock, daughter of James and Mary (Fenno) Babcock, born in Coventry, Tolland, Connecticut, 8 July 1716.

Andrew Warner, son of Isaac and Sarah (Boltwood) Warner, born in Hadley, Hampshire, Massachusetts, 24 February 1672; died in Windham County, Connecticut; married before 1696 in Hadley, Hampshire, Massachusetts, Deborah (---).

There is some uncertainty about the identity of Andrew's wife. If I am reading my notes correctly, Torrey, New England Marriages Prior to 1700, has Andrew married to Deborah (Leffingwell) Crow, widow of Nathaniel Crow. However, there is no Deborah among the children of Sergeant Thomas and Mary (Bushnell) Leffingwell in either the Bushnell Genealogy or the Leffingwell Record. Moreover, if the date imputed for Deborah's birth (1673) is correct, it would be pushing the envelope a bit to have her parents married in September 1672 and their son Thomas born on 11 March 1674 -- unless, of course, Deborah was conceived "out of wedlock," which might possibly explain her absence from public (and published) records. According to Ancestors of the Bingham Family of Utah, Deborah was the daughter not of Sergeant Thomas, but of Lieutenant Thomas Leffingwell -- his last child, born sometime between 1660 and 1665. This attribution is based on a will, cited in the Warner genealogy, in which Lieutenant Thomas named Deborah, wife of Andrew Warner. If born between 1660 and 1665, however, Deborah would have been Andrew's senior by eight to thirteen years: not an impossible proposition, certainly, but not probable.

Though Anderson (Great Migration Begins, p. 1928) says he migrated in 1633, Andrew might have arrived in Massachusetts as early as 2 November 1631. The Abbe Genealogy (p. 36) finds him in 1632 in Cambridge, where he took the freeman's oath, 14 May 1634 (NEHGR 3:92). In 1636, he joined Thomas Hooker's trek to Connecticut and participated in the founding of Hartford, where he was surveyor of highways (NEHGR, 94:280) and, by February 1640, deacon (Anderson). He appears to have been one of the original patentees for the settlement at Farmington, but may not have moved there (Anderson notwithstanding). In any event, we find him again in Hartford in 1650. In 1659, as a result of a dispute between church leaders, Andrew with his new wife, Esther Wakeman, widow of Thomas Seldon, removed to Hadley, where they were among the earliest settlers (Davis Warner, Warner Wanderings, Vol. 1, no. 1). On 16 February 1668, Andrew signed the petition against imposts in Hadley. Other signers included Joseph Wariner, Danille Wardner, John Warner, and Isack Warner (NEHGR 9:90). Well into his 80's, Andrew took the oath of allegiance in Hadley, 8 February 1679. He died there in 1684; his widow, Esther, died in 1693.
